PALYNOLOGY: The branch of science concerned with the study of pollen, spores,
and similar palynomorphs, living and fossil. Term suggested by Hyde &
Williams (1944). Etymol. Greek
"to strew or sprinkle", suggestive of
"fine meal" cognate with Latin pollen, "fine flour,
dust".
"Pronunciation:(pal-ih-nol-o-jee) the "a" is as in
"map,"
and neither as the "a" in "pail" nor the "o" in
"pollen."
(Traverse, 1995)

KrA is an independent palynological consultancy, operated and managed by Keith Richards, based in North Wales, United Kingdom.
KrA specialises in palynology and sequence stratigraphy; areas of specific expertise include South America, West and North Africa, Russia, The Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, China & Taiwan, South East Asia and New Guinea. Unlike most other biostratigraphic disciplines, palynology can be applied in almost all types of marine and non-marine depositional settings. KrA uses quantitative palynological methods to provide basic information such as age and environment, but also provides data for depositional modelling and sequence stratigraphic interpretation. Micropalaeontology and calcareous nannofossil analyses may also be undertaken by specialist consultants.
KrA has a proven record of using palynology at wellsite in order to provide real time stratigraphic monitoring. Wellsite operations have been successfully carried out in South America, South East Asia, New Guinea and the Caspian Sea, assisting drilling operations through identification of casing points, "counting down" to reservoir intervals and confirmation of stratigraphy prior to well completion. In areas of structural complexity, on site monitoring can also give early warnings of unexpected stratigraphic complications such as faulting or inversion. Wellsite operations have utilised a non-acid, "green" palynological preparation technique developed and patented by Jonah Chitolie of GeoTechniqes Research Limited, London.
